PGD | Gender Selection in Cyprus

PGD is the only procedure in the world where gender selection success rates are more than 99%. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is not only test used for selecting gender of the unborn baby, it also helps by genetically offering solutions to select good chromosomes that will ensure that the babies are born free of hereditary diseases. This always requires IVF with a sperm microinjection (ICSI) and the embryos are checked in our laboratory.

We recommend PGD for the following reasons:

  • Couples who desire to know their next baby’s gender, even before implantation
  • For patients who have had more than one miscarriage
  • Couples that have the risk of transmitting chromosomal alterations or monogenic disorders, such as sickle cell disease
  • When IVF treatment has failed several times
  • Abnormalities in spermatozoa
  • Women’s age-related issues

Stages of PGD Treatments in Miracle IVF Centre

1- Application form and first contact with a coordinator

Initially, we receive your request that you are interested in finding out more about the PGD treatments we offer. When we have received your contact details and determined the best time to talk, we will schedule an appointment. During this initial conversation, we will obtain all necessary important information and inform you about the required tests and find out about any previous treatments you have received. Our goal is to understand your personal situation and this is also an opportunity for you to ask us any questions that you would like to know about who we are, our clinic, treatment methods or any particular personal issues that you want to share with us. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

2- Tests before we can start

Before we are able to start with one of the treatments, as you might have read before, there are important tests you have to undergo. These are blood tests and fertility tests to check potential mother’s eggs, it is also possible that you have done these tests elsewhere and already have the results. These tests will be carried out between 1-6 months before you are planning to fly over to Cyprus. Keep in mind that the outcomes of the test are only valid for six months.

It is also possible to ask your own doctor or a gynecology department to perform these tests in a hospital in your home country. When you receive the results of the tests, please do not forget to share them by sending an email to your coordinator. After we receive the results, they will be checked by our doctor, and she will confirm whether you are ready to proceed with the treatment. It is also possible to have all these tests in Cyprus when you come for your treatment.

3 – Compulsory Prescribed Medicines

At this stage of the process, as soon the required tests are completed, you will have an idea of when you can start your treatment with us. Although it is not necessary, we recommend that all patients take a combined contraceptive pill so you know when your menstrual period will start. When you know exactly when your menstruation will start, these will ease any concerns you may have and you are free to plan your trip and book your airplane ticket; it is also helps to take time off work and to inform your employer well in advance. The Miracle IVF Centre will also send you a prescription of the medicines that you must take before you are ready to start your IVF treatment. With this prescription, you can get the medication from your own pharmacy. Please ask your patient coordinator for more information. If the local costs are higher and you need any help with ordering the medication from our suppliers, we collaborate with many distributors in the UK and we are able to purchase them at less cost and deliver them anywhere.

4- The use of medication before coming to Cyprus

At the start of this stage, you will receive daily injections that will commence on day 2 o2 3 of your menstrual period. The medication contains Gonadotropins, hormones of LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) in an injection form that will stimulate your ovaries to produce follicles. You will also receive an individualized plan from our specialist IVF Doctor, Dr. Firdevs, which will provide you the necessary instructions regarding the use of the medication. This prescription is in calendar format to avoid any confusion. Please do not forget to get in touch with your coordinator when you need help or assistance regarding the prescription.

5 – Arriving to Cyprus

When you decide to come to Cyprus for the treatment, you should either come on day 1 of your menstrual period to start the treatment in Cyprus or you should arrive on day 10 of your period, which means on the 9th day of injections, if you wish to start your treatment in your country. Miracle IVF Centre’s coordinators will contact you to set up an appointment. During your first consultation session before the trans-vaginal ultrasound scan, the doctor will measure the follicles and inform you if there is a need for further stimulation and decide whether you are ready for the hCG hatching injection, which will be given to complete the maturing process.

6 – Oocyte Retrieval

All of our patient rooms are luxurious and offer you all the comfort you need during the treatment process. All the bedrooms are equipped with the latest automatic hospital bed, a fridge, sofa or couch, and a well-furnished bathroom. The egg retrieval will be scheduled when the follicles have reached the optimal size, which normally starts around 36 hours after the hCG-injection.

This process will take place under light sedation for your comfort and the procedure will only take 15 minutes. Please note that you are not allowed to eat or drink on this day because of the sedation you will be given before starting the egg collection. The egg collection will performed with an ultrasound guided follicle puncture and will be immediately transferred to our laboratory. At the same time as the egg retrieval process, we need to obtain a semen sample from the male partner for the insemination. To ensure the highest quality of sperm, we recommend that you refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 2 days prior to the egg collection. To maximize fertilisation rates, we are equipped with the latest technology and stay up to date with the latest developments in our sector. To increase the number of eggs for fertilisation, we offer the ICSI treatment to our patients free of charge.

7 – Embryo culture in our Lab

The embryologist will verify whether fertilisation has occurred. This means that we will check (after 24-hours) the pronucleus stage, where a pronucleus is the nucleus of an egg cell/sperm during the process of fertilization and is a combination of half the number of chromosomes of the male and female. During the next 3-5 days, the embryos remain in incubation so that they can develop. As recommended by our embryologist, it is necessary that the embryos are not removed from the incubators or disturbed in to order to maintain the required temperature. If you wish, we offer constant monitoring during the development process. For more information, check here for the information about EmbryoScope.

8- PGD Genetic Analysis

According to our laboratory rates, 90 % of the pronuclear embryos will develop and will be comprised of 8 cells on the third day. Therefore, embryo biopsies are taken on day 3 and examined in the lab for genetic diagnosis. The analysis takes 2 days. Then, the results are shared with the couple on embryo transfer day, before the procedure.

9 – Embryo transfer

When you arrive at our clinic for the embryo transfer, your coordinator will inform you about how many embryos have developed well and what the conditions are; you will make the final decision in regard to how many of the embryos you would like to be transferred. Our recommendation is that three embryos are transferred, as this will give the best chance of achieving pregnancy during one IVF cycle. During the embryo transfer, you will be required to wear sterilized garments; note that there is no need for sedation during this procedure and you are allowed to eat and drink. It is necessary to have a full bladder, so do not forget to drink water beforehand. With the help of a syringe, the embryos will be transferred into the uterus under guidance of ultrasound. After this process, you need to lie down flat for at least 2 hours and the nurse will bring you back to your private bedroom. It is necessary to get as much rest as possible in your hotel. If you wish, it is possible to fly the same evening, but we recommend to wait until the next day to fly back home.
